Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
